Hazem Saghieh is a columnist and the current editor of London-based Al-Hayat's weekly supplement "Tayyarat." He was at the Lebanese daily Al-Safir from 1974 to 1988, first as news editor and then as opinion page editor. Saghieh has authored several books, including نواصب وروافض؛ منازعات الشيعة والسنة في العالم الإسلامي (Nawasib and Rawafid: disputes of Shiites and Sunnis in the Muslim world), Beirut, Dar Al-Saqi, 2009; تصدع المشرق العربي (Fracturing of the Arab east), Beirut, Dar Riyad al-Rayiss, 2004; مأزق ‘الفرد' في الشرق الأوسط (Dilemma of the individual in the Middle East), Beirut, Dar Al-Saqi, 2004; بعث العراق، سلطة صدام قياماً وحطاماً (Iraq's Baʿth: Saddam's power, rise and decline), Beirut, Dar Al-Saqi, 2003; and وداع العروبة (A farewell to Arabism), Beirut, Dar Al-Saqi, 1999. He was born in Lebanon.
SYNOPSIS
The perennial iconoclast, Saghieh has traveled the course of the Arab intellectual spectrum from the left, with its focus on liberation and justice, to the right, with its neo-liberal fear that the Arab world may not be capable of achieving progress on its own, before settling on a critical posture that highlights the internal contradictions of the various approaches without seeming to be able to propose a complete alternative. Saghieh's cynicism, however, cannot be mistaken for disengagement. Saghieh remains one of the potent voices of self-criticism in Arab culture.

The Middle East is familiar with two types of individuals: the racist philo-Semite and the anti-racist anti-Semite. Their popularity expresses the differences between the histories of Europe and the region of the Middle East where conflict rages and religious inheritance is accompanied by fragmented and disintegrated traditions.
These two types were deceitful and liars since they were each exploiting their respective grievances in order to oppress the other. First by questioning each other's stories, then ending with calls of annexation, subjugation, liberation and inclusion of the other in a "greater" land. Among the perpetual signs of lying was that their imperial awareness was not in line with the alleged rejection of both anti-Semitism and racism.
The worldwide decrease of enlightened awareness and the multiplication of identities, accompanied by fallout from the political process in the Middle East, rendered the distinction between the two concepts/types impossible.
Ayman Al-Zawahiri's description of Barack Obama as a "servant of the house" was very telling in this regard. It showed a new dimension of degeneracy where al-Zawahiri appeared anti-Semitic and outspoken about his racism. He, who possesses the imperial awareness, has exposed our old lie. We have been pretending to share with the blacks their oppression until Al-Zawahiri revealed that they were mere "black servants."

الشرق الأوسط عرف دائماً العنصريّ المناهض للاساميّة واللاساميّ المناهض للعنصريّة، وكان شيوعهما تعبيراً عن اختلاف تاريخ تلك المنطقة عن التاريخ الأوروبيّ، وعن كونها أرض الصراع المباشر، فضلاً عن وطأة الميراث الدينيّ المصحوب بتقاليد التفتّت والتفكّك عليها. بيد أن حاملي هذين الوعيين كانوا زائفين وكاذبين، كلّ من طرفيه يستخدم مظلوميّته لإنزال المظلوميّة بالآخر، بدءاً بالتشكيك بروايته وانتهاء بدعوات الضمّ والإخضاع والتحرير واشتماله بأرض «كبرى» ما. وكان من علامات الكذب المداوِرة أن الوعي الامبراطوريّ للاثنين لا يتماشى مع زعم الرفض للاساميّة والعنصريّة في وقت واحد.
بيد أن تراجع الوعي التنويريّ على صعيد كونيّ، وانفجار الهويّات، مصحوبين بانتكاسة العملية السياسيّة في الشرق الأوسط، جعلت فصل المفهومين راجحاً على وحدتهما. وقد جاءت العبارة الأخيرة لأيمن الظواهري عن باراك أوباما بوصفه «عبد الدار» تشي بذلك، بل تشي ببلوغ الانحطاط سويّة أبعد: فهو، اللاساميّ، جاهر بعنصريّته. وهو، ذو الوعي الامبراطوريّ، فضح الكذبة التي كذبها بعضنا طويلاً حين تماهى، في المظلوميّة، مع السود، فإذا بهم، كما كشف الظواهري، مجرد «عبيد».
في مقابل ذلك يفتح انتخاب أوباما فرصة، مجرّد فرصة، يتوقّف على استجابة العرب والمسلمين واليهود لها إمكان تجديد الوحدة لما هو واحد.
